The famous Nikkor 58mm f1.4 lens that was introduced in 2013, succeeding one of the legendary Nikkor lens 58mm Noct f1.2 which was discontinued in 1997. This lens has its haters and a fair share of admirers, and it is true, this may not be the lens for everyone, but definitely will be a ‘must-have’ lens for those who appreciates the fine output and the quality of images created by this unique lens.
First who those who are looking to expand beyond their arsenal of 50mm lineup of their lens, this lens will offer something special, more than just your usual 50s, and in between a 85mm, this successor to the legendary 58mm noct of Nikon will not disappoint. Just to clarify, if you want the sharpest lens, this will not be the one you should be looking at, instead consider Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART lens, otherwise, have an open mind to look beyond the pixel peeping habit to consider the character of the lens and see for yourself the quality of the photos created and be amazed by it.
The N – Nano Coated, I must say, given this lens a character that is missing today. The colour rendering and the clarity that reduces flare, has given a 3D feel to it. The fade off from the focused part of the photo to the outer lining of it simply fades off gently like butter, and that’s the key difference of a great lens to a normal or mediocre one. I love how this lens is perfectly paired to my Nikon Df, it seems that they are made for each other, and since I’ve got this, it is on the camera ever since.
However, as much as this is a great lens to have on your arsenal, this is not a cheap lens, which cost around USD 1,596.00 on B&H Photos, and for a second hand, about USD 1,500 as well. Which you can easily get the trilogy prime lens 24mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4 with this money.
The handling of the lens is amazingly light, despite the plastic feel to it, it does not really give me the vibes that it is of any inferior quality. In fact, it is light and made to be carried everywhere on the streets or doing wedding shoot.
Keep a look out for more photos as I will be taking this lens along for all my shoots and i will do another review of it soon.
